From The Chair: October 2012

October is National Arts and Humanities Month. Think how dull our world would be without the music we enjoy, fine photography, paintings, beautiful architecture, public murals and sculptures, and so much more.

Reflect on your own educational background: did you enjoy glee club or chorus? Band? Drama classes and school plays? Art and drawing classes? Be grateful, for far fewer students today have those opportunities.

This month resolve to visit a museum, attend a music performance or play, marvel at the design of a beautiful building or even a favorite piece of furniture, or read or re-read a piece of classic literature. Then remind people that the arts and humanities are not “add-ons”. They are a critical part of our humanity and an identifying mark of a truly civilized people.
