Legislators and tourists arriving at the State Capitol on Wednesday, May 25 will be greeted with an entertaining surprise.  The Louisiana Partnership for Arts Advocacy (LPAA) has planned an advocacy day filled with dancers, musicians (including a duo of violins), theatrical presentations, and a mini art walk featuring the work of Louisiana artist laureate George Rodrigue. Arts Council representatives from across the state will be joined by dozens of cultural organizations as well as members of the State Arts Council in the four corners of the rotunda where four art disciplines will be demonstrated. The advocacy event presents an important opportunity for legislators to speak one-on-one with members of Louisiana’s cultural economy — the state’s second largest employment sector.

Louisiana has reached a crucial point in history, and legislators are poised to inflict critical damage on our states rich, vibrant cultural heritage. A combined cut of 60% is proposed for this coming year’s budget, compared to 2009’s funding levels. Representatives from Louisiana’s arts industry will pack the rotunda, and they’ll be easy to spot: dressed in black, wearing buttons that read “Art WORKS for Louisiana”.
